Where do the swans go at night

Where Do the Swans Go at Night is a concept album developed over the course of more than a year spent working along the Danube in and around Vienna. Returning to the river repeatedly — at different times of day and across changing seasons — the site became a place of listening, recording, note-taking, and research.

From this ongoing process, five pieces gradually took shape. Each is rooted in a specific location and atmosphere along the riverbank, drawing directly on field recordings gathered on site.

Some pieces remain raw soundscapes, while others transform the material into composed forms: the barrage at the northern end of Danube Island, captured with geophones that pick up its vibrations in the persistent winter winds — a structure that also serves as a nighttime refuge for swans. Hydrophone recordings near the OMV, where underwater life blends with the hum of industrial infrastructure.

The work has been presented at TV Control Center Athens, Zacherlfabrik Vienna, and Echoraum Vienna.

The album will be released on tape in 2026 via the Vienna-based label Superego Records.

Supported by the Federal Ministry for Housing, Arts, Culture, and Media (BMWKMS) and the City of Vienna Cultural Department (MA 7).
